The Montana Governor signed off on sports betting legislation to make the state the 10th in the US outside of Nevada to offer this activity from businesses based within its borders.  Online sports betting will only be available from offshore sportsbooks

With sports betting now legalized in Montana, sportsbook kiosks operating from the state will only be based out of taverns and kiosks.  While mobile wagering will be available, one can only place bets within these establishments.  Away from the desigated taverns and kiosks,  sports bets can be placed via one's mobile devices with offshore sportsbooks accessible to those living in Montana.

Nevada had been the only state offering full service sportsbooks prior to last May when the US Supreme Court reversed decades of prohibition against the activity.

It will be up to individual states to determine whether sports gambling should be legalized.

Montana was among a handful of states (along with Nevada, Oregon and Delaware) that had been exempt from The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992.  The state already had a specific sports betting law on the books.

Gov. Steve Bullock signed off on a bill that will allow the designated taverns to offer bets on sports.

9th or 10th State to Legalize Sports Betting?

The Montana law became effective immediately, and supporters expect to move quickly to get the system operating. The bill's sponsor, Democratic Rep. Ryan Lynch, said the goal is to have it running by the start of football season in September.

"It's a good day for Montana to be able to see sports betting in the marketplace,'' Lynch said. "I think Montanans will enjoy the new aspect of watching sports for entertainment as well as betting on it.''

Gambling911.com has reported that Tennessee became the 9th state to legalize sports betting just days before Montana.  While this won't become official until mid-May, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has already declared he will not be vetoing the measure despite his objections to it.  Lee will also not be signing the bill into law, however, the legislation automatically passes without a veto or a lack of signature after sailing through both the state house and senate.

These states have already legalized sportsbooks to run from within their borders, each with varying rules.
