USA World Cup hopes alive: Support your country by betting on Team USA

The USA has a good shot of beating Ghana Thursday to keep their World Cup hopes alive after a stellar performance against Italy

Team USA was listed with 4 to 1 odds of qualifying from their respective group come Thursday at VIPsports.com (See Web Site Here).  That's a US$400 payout for every US$100 bet and there is some value here if the USA can pull out a win over the more favored Ghana and The Czech Republic somehow beats Italy.

U.S. coach Bruce Arena said Ghana's change of fortune was "miraculous" and expected Thursday's pivotal World Cup Group E final game against the West Africans to be a huge challenge.

"As well as we turned our team around from game one to game two, Ghana has been miraculous," Arena told reporters on Tuesday at the U.S. team hotel.

The U.S. were rocked by the Czech Republic 3-0 in their opening fixture and Italy made short work of Ghana, 2-0.

Both nations responded in their second games, the U.S. gaining a gritty, 1-1 draw with Italy but Ghana turned heads even more by dominating the highly regarded Czechs 2-0.

One key aspect of the match, said Arena, would be dealing with Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien.

"Their athleticism is one of their significant strengths," said Arena. "(Michael) Essien's one of the top players in the tournament. I think this will be a heck of a game."

Forward Brian McBride, bidding to score in three straight finals, stressed the need for the U.S. to home in on Essien and be solid as a group.

"The only thing that will neutralize him is us keeping the ball," McBride said. "He's equally good in offence and defensively.

"The only way we are going to do well is if we do it together," he said. "Regardless of how good Essien is, they're very good at finding space. We have to defend together and attack together if we want to win this game."

To advance, the USA will need to beat Ghana and Italy must win against the Czech Republic.

U.S. coach Bruce Arena criticized Landon Donovan's play in the opening loss to the Czech Republic, and there was no shortage of teammates and staff who spoke with him, attempting to prod Donovan back on track.

Donovan responded in last weekend's 1-1 tie against Italy. He was active against the Italians, especially with wide-open spaces in the second half after the ejections of three players. He fed McBride for what was nearly a go-ahead goal in the 63rd minute, and pressed Italy with counters.

"Landon did things against Italy I've never seen him do before," Arena said. "He was a warrior on the field."

Oddsmakers had the USA and Ghana practically neck and neck with both offering some value - nearly 2 to 1 odds.  Ghana had odds of +125 (almost even) while the USA was closer to 2 to 1 odds at +185 (US$185 paid out for every US$100 bet at VIPsports.com (See Web Site Here)  The draw was listed at +230 odds.
