A women’s flyweight bout featuring No. 1 ranked contender Jessica “Evil” Eye (15-7) against rising star Cynthia Calvillo (8-1-1) serves as the main event for UFC Fight Night: Eye vs. Calvillo on Saturday, June 13. The 11-fight ticket takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Eye is hoping for another crack at the title, one she had last summer only to be dropped by champ Valentina Shevchenko. She rebounded with a win over Viviane Araujo last time in the octagon. Calvillo, meanwhile, makes her UFC debut as a flyweight. Oddsmakers expect a close fight with Calvillo a negative odds underdog.

Jessica Eye vs. Cynthia Calvillo Fight Preview

Both fighters have a chip on their shoulder after getting reamed by critics for being the main event. And both are aiming to silence those critics with a vengeful display on Saturday. Eye (15-7, 3 KOs, 1 SUB) is ranked No. 1 in the division but she’s closer in talent to the fighters below her than she is to the champ.

Calvillo (8-1-1, 2 KOs, 3 SUBs) had trouble making weight at the lower level prompting her jump to the 125. She missed the mark by 4.5 pounds last time out and came away with a majority draw decision against an unheralded Marina Rodriguez. She makes her flyweight debut in a class that’s looking for fresh blood to contest belt holder Valentina Shevchenko.

Outclassed by Shevchenko in her first title fight last summer, Eye showed just how ordinary the division is behind the champ. She had decisions over Kalindra Faria, Jessica-Rose Clark and Katlyn Chookagian to earn a shot at the belt. Those victories came after four straight decision losses.

Many feel Eye isn’t deserving of her ranking based on her record. She’s not flashy in the octagon with 16 of her professional fights going the distance. However, her struggles came as a bantamweight where she was just 1-5. When competing as a flyweight Eye is an impressive 14-2. Staying true to form Eye won a unanimous decision over Araujo last December in what was the most impressive win of her career to date.

Pummeled in the first two rounds in her last fight, Calvillo used a monster third round to come away with a draw to remain unbeaten in her previous three bouts. She followed her first professional loss with a first-round submission of Poliana Botehlo and unanimous decision over Cortney Casey.

There are no real standouts other than the champ in the flyweight division presenting Calvillo with a great opportunity to make her mark. Beating the top-ranked contender puts her in a position to fight for the belt with a few more wins. That’s a huge step for a raw fighter, though. Calvillo is much better when she wrestles. She showed that in her last fight by dominating on the mat to earn a draw. If she stays on her feet Calvillo will get bullied by Eye.

This one is definitely hard to call. Both fighters have strengths on the mat but for some reason don’t use them consistently. That’s true especially for Calvillo, who thinks she’s better on her feet than she actually is. Maybe she learned from her last outing by torturing Rodriguez pressing for takedowns and doing enough damage on the mat to earn a draw. Why she didn’t do that earlier is a mystery. Finishing fights isn’t a strong suit for either fighter, so there’s a good chance this one goes the distance. And you’ll pay for it, too. Keep in mind that 25 minutes is new to both and fatigue could be a factor. Also, it remains to be seen how the jump in divisions affects Calvillo. She missed weight in two previous outings so she was basically fighting at another level.

Iowa State: Are They The Underdogs To Look For In March Madness?

They may be defined as “underdogs” or “Cinderella teams”, a term that is usually saved for teams that have little to no chance of winning even a single game during the NCAA Tournament. Teams like Loyola Marymount (1990), George Mason (2006), Davidson (2008), VCU (2011), UConn (2014), and Loyola Chicago (2018) come to mind when conversations turn toward the most surprising tournament runs in recent memory.
