Tony Kanaan, Danica Patrick, Marco Andretti Promise Big Payouts

Tony Kanaan was listed with 5 to 1 odds; Danica Patrick 25 to 1 odds; Marco Andretti 16 to 1 odds in this year's Indy 500.  Following a rain delay, the three were leading and promising a massive payout.  Ultimately a crash would spoil two of the three's finishes.

This is Carrie Stroup reporting for Sports911.com.  Even if Kanaan were to win, the payout would be a swift $500 for every $100 bet.  He finished 8th after being involved in a crash along with Marco Andretti.

Danica Patrick would have paid out $2500 for every $100 bet!

Instead it was Dario Franchitti who would go on to win the 2007 Indy 500.

The 91st running of the Indianapolis 500 restarted after a several-hour-long rain delay, with a bunched-up field sprinting to get as much of the race in before a feared second rain delay.

Brazilian Tony Kanaan lead the race, with Andretti Green Racing teammate Danica Patrick also at the front of the pack following 150 of a scheduled 200 laps.

Fears of the rain contributed to aggressive race strategy, with eight different leaders, 18 lead changes and multiple mishaps in pit row.

Marco Andretti, the runner-up last year as a rookie, took the lead under caution during a round of pit stops, but Kanaan passed him on the restart and was locked in first when a crash by rookie Phil Giebler brought out the yellow on the next lap. The race continued under caution the next five laps and was red-flagged to a stop after the 113th lap -- 282.5 miles -- when the rain hit.

Helio Castroneves, who started from the pole and traded the early leads with Kanaan, dropped to 29th after he had trouble taking on fuel during a pit stop shortly after 100 miles.  Castroneves was among the favorites to win this Indy 500 race.
