Sugar Bowl Betting Odds - 2008: Hawaii vs. Georgia

The Sugar Bowl will be played on New Year's Day 2008 and feature undefeated Hawaii vs. Georgia with betting odds to be announced shortly.

No. 10 Hawaii (12-0) will play 4th-ranked Georgia (10-2). Hawaii is playing in its first ever BCS game after going undefeated during the entire 2007 College Football season.  They were the only team to do so.  Georgia just narrowly missed getting into the BCS Championship game.

No respect for Hawaii, however, as the folks at Bookmaker.com have made them a +10 underdog verses Georgia.  By New Year's Day they were listed with +8 odds.

The Sugar Bowl is an annual American college football bowl game played in the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Sugar Bowl has been played annually since 1935. Along with the Orange Bowl and Sun Bowl (also played annually since 1935), the Sugar Bowl is the second-oldest bowl game in the country, behind the Rose Bowl (first played 1902, played annually since 1916).

The Sugar Bowl hosted the BCS National Championship Game in 2000 and 2004. However, since the 2006 season, the BCS National Championship Game has been a stand-alone event one week following the New Year's Day bowl games (including the Sugar Bowl). In other words, under the current BCS format, the Sugar Bowl will not host the BCS National Championship Game, although the Louisiana Superdome will continue to be one of the stadiums used to host the BCS National Championship Game a week after the Sugar Bowl.

The payout for the 2005-2006 game was $14-17 million per participating team.

It will be UH's second mainland bowl game; in 1992, the Rainbows beat Illinois in the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, Calif.

Hawaii has never played Georgia, a perennial SEC power and a team some consider the best in the nation this year.

"This will be the biggest game in school history," quarterback Colt Brennan said.

A crowd of around 4,000 at the Stan Sheriff Center at UH, including the Warriors team, cheered wildly as the announcement was made on Fox's BCS announcement show Sunday afternoon.

"It's not just about our team, it's about our whole state," coach June Jones said.
