Senator
John McCain Smokes the Competition
Senator John McCain
was flying high Wednesday.
Tuesday night, The One
Hitters – a congressional softball league team
sponsored by Students for Sensible Drug Policy, the
National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana
Laws and related advocacy groups – got smoked by the
“No Talent AZ Clowns,” a congressional softball
league team comprised of current and former staffers
for Senators John McCain (R-AZ) by a final score of
13-2.
The One Hitters had
been featured in Sunday’s Style section of The
Washington Post for their and 13-3 record and number
one ranking in the league. But the media attention
was a bit premature.
"We did not give
the No Talent AZ Clowns a fighting chance to win
this one," said Sports911.com Senior Editor, Payton
O'Brien,
referring to our preview of this game.
“The story only motivated our team even more,” said
AZ Clowns Co-Captain Rebecca Jensen, Senator
McCain's Legislative Assistant. Mark Bruegger,
formerly Senator McCain's Research Assistant and a
recent graduate of Catholic University's Columbus
School of Law who will join the Army JAG corps this
fall attributed the team’s success to being drug
free.
All joking aside,
all the co-captains and team members said The One
Hitters were worthy opponents and very friendly.
Coach Jensen mentioned that Carli Bertrand, Senator
McCain's former NOAA fellow and current NOAA
employee and David Wonnenberg, formerly a staff
member of Senator McCain’s, were essential to the
team’s victory. Mark Delich, outfielder and former
McCain staffer also added, “It didn’t hurt that we
Arizonans are used to 100 degree temperatures, we
can take the heat.”
