Romney: Adam and Eve Were "Promiscuous"

While in New Hampshire this weekend, 2008 US Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney quipped while looking at a couple's tree with its very big leaves:  "Adam and Eve would not have looked as promiscuous if they had had leaves this big."

The implication being that Adam and Eve were sluts.  The comment is sure to offend some of the very religious folks Romney is trying to win over.

Here is the true story of Adam and Eve:

God plants Adam in the Garden of Eden and gives him total dominion over everything in it - including all of the fish, the birds and every living thing that moved on the earth at that time. After a certain period of time, God then sees that it is not good that Adam continue to remain alone - so He then creates the first woman Eve by causing a deep sleep to fall on Adam and then takes out one of his ribs.

God literally creates the first woman from the rib of Adam. God meant for Eve to be a helper comparable to him and He then tells the both of them to be fruitful and multiply and to fill the earth and subdue it....together...not with other species.

After God brings Eve to Adam to be his helper, Adam makes a very powerful statement that has future implications for all married people. Here is what he says in reference to Eve:

"This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh ..." (Genesis 2:22)

"Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh."

A promiscuous person tends to encounter several pieces of flesh over a lifetime (or in the case of Gambling911.com reporter, Jenny Woo, a single week).

The Adam and Eve story is not about being promiscuous, it's focus is on monogamy.  The temptation brought on by the apple tree has nothing to do with what Mitt Romney perceives to be their lurid sexual exploits.  It's about sins, snakes and lies, something perhaps Romney cannot relate to.

Jake Tapper, ABC News' Senior National Correspondent based in the network's Washington bureau, questions what Romney could have been getting at.

"Adam and Eve looked promiscuous?

"Adam and Eve were naked. (Before eating from the Tree of Knowledge, that is, after which they became ashamed of their nakedness.)

"Does naked = promiscuous?

"Asked what he meant, a Romney spokesman told Stuart he meant what he said.

"Interesting."

The Adam and Eve story is presented in a number of religions with differing interpretations, none of which paint the couple as sex craving immoral sluts.

Romney in the past has been criticized for mistreating his family's pet dog.  He was reported to have tied his dog, Seamus, to the roof of his car and drove him hundreds of miles at a time on family vacations.  This act was in clear violation of Massachusetts state law.

Romney claimed in an interview with Fox News that Seamus enjoyed riding on the roof of his car.  Seamus has since passed away and is unavailable to comment.

Mitt Romney's odds to become the next President of the US were listed at 8 to 1 at Sportsbook.com
