Puerto Rico police no
closer to finding Anhang assailant

PUERTO Rico police have
ruled out robbery as a motive for the slaying last week
of former Winnipegger Adam Anhang, but are no closer to
finding the lone man who stabbed him to death.
Puerto Rico police superintendent Pedro Toledo said in
an interview his investigators have no motive for the
brutal attack Sept. 22 that killed the 32-year-old
Anhang, a real estate developer and partner in an online
gambling company.
However, given that police found Anhang's wallet,
passport and jewelry on his body, robbery has been
eliminated as a motive, Toledo said.
Toledo said Aurea Vazquez Rijos, 25, a woman identified
as Anhang's wife who was also injured in the attack, has
provided a description of the attacker. Police are using
that information to compose a sketch that investigators
hope will lead to a suspect, Toledo added.
"Every aspect of (Anhang's life) is of interest to us.
Right now, we're trying to determine a motive."
Details of the killing have been sketchy. Toledo said it
appears Anhang went to a restaurant called the Pink
Skirt in an upscale section of old San Juan owned by
Rijos. Anhang was attacked at about 12:40 a.m. as he
left the restaurant to return to his car, he added.
Police are also awaiting results of a forensic
examination of the knife used to kill Anhang, which was
left at the scene.
A friend and business partner of Anhang said he does not
believe any of the former Winnipegger's extensive
business connections was behind the homicide.
Steve Reddy, a partner of Anhang's at Costa Rica-based
CWC Gaming, said Anhang was a gentle soul who did not
appear to make any enemies in his many business
interests. Reddy, who was contacted yesterday in transit
to attend Anhang's funeral today in Winnipeg, said all
of Anhang's business partners are in shock over the
killing.
Some early speculation focused on Anhang's involvement
with Internet gambling. CWC Gaming offers sophisticated
software to allow online gamblers access to streaming
audio and video, a step up from the animation offered at
most online gambling sites. CWC Gaming has announced
contracts with some of the world's largest Internet
gambling companies, including Ladbrokes, Easybets and
BetInternet.
Reddy said Anhang was also making a name for himself in
real estate, with ownership of a resort hotel and spa on
an island just off the Puerto Rican coast and plans for
construction of an office tower in San Juan. Some
reports indicated he was converting hotel properties to
condominiums.
