Suspect in brutal beating identified by "PokerStars" jacket

A man was hospitalized for head injuries after he was attacked by a man wielding a baseball bat in Monterey late Wednesday, police reported.

Officers said they were called to the area of Franklin and Alvarado streets because of a disturbance about 11:30 p.m. When they arrived, police found the victim, described as a man in his 20s, suffering from a head injury. He was transported to a local hospital via ambulance, where he remained Friday, said Monterey police Lt. Leslie Sonné.

Information about the man's condition was not released, but Thursday officers said they did not believe it was life-threatening.

Police said they suspect another man in his 20s who was captured on a security videotape carrying a baseball bat to the scene.

The suspect was described as an Asian man, approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing around 180 pounds. He wore a blue jacket with a red liner with the words "PokerStars.com," or something similar, police said.

A black male adult accompanied the suspect, according to police, and is wanted for questioning.

"He is not listed as a suspect," Sonné said Friday. He was described as approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing 150-160 pounds, with a shaved head, wearing a white T-shirt and dark pants.

Sonné said she understood from detectives that the victim and the others did not previously know each other well.

According to investigators, a confrontation occurred earlier between the victim and the assailant, who returned later with the bat.

"Something happened first and they came back," Sonné said.
