In a yet-to-be-announced fight, oddsmakers have made current lightweight titleholder Charles Oliveira the underdog versus Dustin Poirier.

SportsBetting.ag set odds for the upcoming title bout, and Poirier is nearly a 1-to-2 favorite over the current champ

Fight Odds

Charles Oliveira +155 (pays $155 for every $100 bet for a $155 profit.  That $100 is refunded with a win)

Dustin Poirier -180 (pays $100 for every $180 bet for a $100 profit.  That $180 is refunded with a win)

Poirier defeated Conor McGregor by TKO Saturday night after the fight was called due to the Irishman injuring his ankle.  The payout was $250 for every $100 bet on the Poirier winning + the Method of Victory.

UFC President Dana White hasn't ruled out a Poirier-McGregor 4, suggesting that McGregor would have made it out of the round had he not suffered the injury. Poirier is 2-1 versus McGregor to date.

The fight itself generated the third highest traffic day for Gambling911.com so far this year, only behind The Floyd-Mayweather-Logan-Paul exhibition bout last month and none other than the Poirier-McGregor fight back on January 23.  While Mayweather-Paul was double the traffic of Poirier-McGregor 2, the third installment of the later brought in just a few hundred fewer eyes.  Factoring in that this most recent fight took place during what is generally the slowest period of the year, there is an argument to be had that a fourth fight between Poirier and McGregor would still be a massive draw.

In fact, Dave Mason of BetOnline revealed that UFC 264 topped UFC 251 as the most bet on UFC card in the history of his company.

White also revealed that Poirier taking on Oliveira next was likely and the oddsmakers beat Dana to the punch

Oliveira won the vacant lightweight title with a second-round TKO over Michael Chandler back in May.

In an interesting sidenote, the Brazilian lightweight had incorrectly predicted a victory by McGregor in UFC 264.

“Last time, I bet Dustin Poirier could win after the third round, but he went there and surprised me by knocking him out in the second,” Oliveira said in an interview with MMA Fighting. “This time I bet on Conor. This time I think Conor wins. I think he’s coming with a better head, a better spirit, so I think Conor wins this time.”

Poirier is 28-6 with one no-contest for his professional career, and has won seven of his last eight fights.

They may be defined as “underdogs” or “Cinderella teams”, a term that is usually saved for teams that have little to no chance of winning even a single game during the NCAA Tournament. Teams like Loyola Marymount (1990), George Mason (2006), Davidson (2008), VCU (2011), UConn (2014), and Loyola Chicago (2018) come to mind when conversations turn toward the most surprising tournament runs in recent memory.
