Now that two of the best coaches in the history of the NBA, Larry Brown and Phil Jackson, are settled in their new homes or in Phil’s case his old home, the fun can begin. Who will lead his team to more wins in the upcoming 2005-06 NBA season? Both the Lakers and Knicks have tons of question marks, but not in their coaching positions. In Los Angeles, Jackson will have to find a way to get through to Kobe Bryant and make the most out of the Lakers mediocre roster. In New York, Brown will have to find a way to get through to Stefan Marbury, if he is still there, and press the Knicks to play defense for the first time in years.


It really is anyone’s guess just how well each coach’s respective team will do this season, but one thing is certain, expectations will be much higher than they were last season. The Lakers have the deep and challenging Western Conference to navigate through with no real big man, which is nothing but trouble in a conference full of great ones. The Eastern Conference, which has been by far the weaker conference for years, is in the middle of a resurgence with great young teams like Washington, Chicago, and Cleveland. Both teams’ fan bases have expectations that they will make the playoffs at the least. However, neither team made it last year, and so, that could be a tough task even for two coaches who know only how to win. The one X factor is Larry Brown’s health, which caused him to miss 17 games last season while coaching in Detroit.
