Oscar Betting (2008)

Oscar Betting for 2008 is currently being offered by BetOnline.com.  The website's odds can be found by clicking on Live Lines, then Future/Props, then Entertainment (all found on the right hand navigation bar).

"Oscar betting has proven to be one of the biggest wagering events of the year and an unprecedented number of inquiries here at Gambling911.com demonstrates just how huge 2008 Oscar betting will be," points out Gambling911.com Senior Editor, Payton O'Brien.  "We have alerted all readers to ensure bets are placed early to avoid cataclysmic surges in traffic the immediate hours leading up to Oscar starting time."

BetOnline.com lists a number of big favorites that offer little value in a number of the categories.  As such, it is always prudent to consider other nominees with better payout potential.   Case in point, Daniel Day Lewis is a huge -1800 favorite to win the Best Actor nod.

"You would have to bet a whopping $1800 just to win $100!" exclaimed O'Brien.  "He's a lock for sure but George Clooney and Johnny Depp still stand a chance paying out $800 for every $100 bet."

In the past, Oscar upsets have led to massive payouts.  Who could forget that supposed "lock" Brokeback Mountain's loss two years ago?

The Best Actress nomination offers a more even playing field and a better chance to walk off with some nice chump change.

Julie Christie is the favorite to win but she's not a huge favorite compared to some of the other categories.  BetOnline has her listed with -350 odds at press time.  Marion Cotillard is listed with +200 odds for a payout potential of $200 for every $100 bet.  Ellen Page pays $450.  The big dogs in this category - Laura Linney and Cate Blanchett, respectively, offer an enticing $1800 payout for every $100 bet.

Helen O'Hara from Empire Magazine believes there will be a real race within this category between Christie and a much better paying slight underdog, Cotillard:

"I honestly think they're neck and neck. People acted like it was a surprise that Marion beat Julie. I don't think it was. It's a fantastic performance from her...and she's convincing every step of the way. But I think it's absolutely a two-horse race between them."

The Best Supporting Actress category is so close that there are two favorites listed - both with -130 odds.  Cate Blanchett gets another nomination for this year's Oscars, this time for I'm Not There.  She is the favorite along with Amy Ryan for Gone Baby Gone in which she plays a drug-addicted single mother, desperate to find her four year-old daughter.

When it comes to Oscar betting for 2008, the Best Picture category is not a lock by any stretch of the imagination even though No Country for Old Men is listed with -350 odds.  There Will Be Blood had odds of +220; Juno had odds of +450; Atonement had odds of +675 and Michael Clayton was the big +2500 underdog in this category.
