This is Carrie Stroup reporting for Sports911.com. Throw high scoring offenses out the window, nothing is more crucial come NHL playoff time than the play of a team’s goaltender. History dictates that teams that are the best value for bettors during the postseason are those that have top notch goalies. Whether it be the New Jersey Devils riding Martin Brodeur and his 2.03 goals against average (GAA) all the way to the Stanley Cup in 2003 or the Carolina Hurricanes riding red-hot rookie Cam Ward all the way to the Stanley Cup; one thing is common: without stellar goalie play, your team most likely will not win it all.
The winner’s of the President’s Trophy, the Buffalo Sabres, are SuperBook.com’s overwhelming 7-2 favorite to hoist “The Cup”. Even though they had the best record throughout the regular season, that doesn’t necessarily ensure post season success. Over the last 16 seasons, only four President Trophy winners were able to outlast every other team in the postseason. A weakness for the Sabres could be their goalkeeper Ryan Miller. Miller does not have a ton of postseason experience under his belt and his GAA of 2.73 is pretty mediocre. A couple of squads that are getting plenty of “future action” at SuperBook are the New Jersey Devils and the Vancouver Canucks. After analyzing who each team has guarding the net, it seems as if the 8-1 payoff each of these teams have could be a decent bet. The Devils of course have the aforementioned Brodeur and his impressive 2.18 GAA. Canucks backers obviously feel confident in goalie Roberto Luongo and who can blame them with his 2.28 GAA. Of course any talk of goalies and Stanley Cup favorites has to include Dominic Hasek and the Detroit Red Wings. At the ripe age of 42, Hasek was second in the NHL with a 2.05 GAA.
