Champions League:
Barcelona The Team
to WatchSportingbet has made Barcelona the team to beat with odds to win the 2008 Champions League set at 14/5. That's a €280 win for every €100 bet. Patrick Barclay of the Telegraph likes these odds. This time I fancy Barcelona to be the ones standing alone against the Premier League. The outcome of none of the quarter-finals can be taken for granted, but Barcelona should be too creative for Schalke, United too fast for Roma and Chelsea just too persistent for the dark horses of Fenerbahce. Barclay also believes that Arsenal should be seen as favorites to win the 2008 Champions League. They had odds set at 5/1 Arsenal must be regarded as favourites. Even the fact that the second leg is at Anfield, where Chelsea have twice perished in semi-finals, will scarcely daunt Cesc Fabregas and company and those of their fans whose memories go back 19 years; it was at Anfield that George Graham's Arsenal caused the greatest denouement since competition for the English title started, Michael Thomas scoring the decisive goal in the 94th minute. If Arsenal were to qualify for a semi with Chelsea, I would again fancy them, for all the West London club's burning desire for the extra European dimension Arsenal acquired through reaching a final against Barcelona two seasons ago which they long threatened to win despite Jens Lehmann's dismissal. Teams led by Arsene Wenger have a habit of bouncing back and, if they return to the final, Arsenal might well be granted a rematch with the Catalan institution managed by Frank Rijkaard - at least for the time being. Chelsea and Man United were both listed with 7/2 odds of winning the 2008 Champions League.
