No Country for Old Men wins the Oscar for Best Picture as the frontrunner coming in. It was listed with around 1/3 odds and was widely expected to win. The film was written, directed, and produced by Joel and Ethan Coen and stars Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, and Javier Bardem, who won for "best supporting actor" earlier in the evening.
No Country for Old
Men draws heavily on
McCarthy's themes of
chance and fate; it
tells the story of a
drug deal gone wrong
and the ensuing
cat-and-mouse drama
as three men
crisscross each
other's paths in the
desert landscape of
1980 West Texas.
The film has
received almost
universally positive
reviews. As of
February 7, 2008,
the review
aggregator Rotten
Tomatoes recorded
that 94% of 189
critics gave the
film positive
reviews, while
another review
aggregator,
Metacritic, records
an average score of
91%, based on 36
reviews. The
film was widely
discussed as a
possible candidate
for several Oscars.
Javier Bardem, in
particular, has
received
considerable praise
for his performance
in the film. There was some question whether There Would be Blood or even Juno might win following an evening where two underdogs took home the Oscar in both the "best supporting actress" and "best actress" categories. Tilda Swinton was a huge upset in the "best supporting actress" category, paying out $800 for every $100 bet at Bookmaker.com. Marion Cotillard, nominated for La Vie En Rose, was not as big an underdog but paid out 2 to 1 odds in the "best actress" category where Julie Cristie was a small favorite. --- Christopher Costigan, Gambling911.com Publisher CCostigan@CostiganMedia.com Originally published February 24, 2008 11:46 pm EST
