NRL Stars Mark Gasnier and Jarryd Hayne Linked to Shootings

Australian National Rugby League stars Mark Gasnier and Jarryd Hayne were believed to have been targeted in a late night drive by shooting outside a Kings Cross nightclub.

Parramatta rugby league club CEO Denis Fitzgerald said he believed Hayne had been caught up in a shooting and the club was trying to locate the player.

He said a second player involved in the incident was believed to be St George-Illawarra's Mark Gasnier.

"We've obviously heard the reports but have been unable to contact Jarryd Hayne so we are none the wiser in regard to that at this stage,'' he said.

"We are trying to locate him and others.''

The players escaped injury in the shooting.

It's understood a man involved in a fight inside the club fired shots at the players from the rear seat of a taxi.

It's reported there were two shootings in Kings Cross overnight, the first involving a 55-year-old man who was shot in the leg last night.

Police said the man, reported to be a nightclub manager, was found slumped in a doorway about 8.40pm last night.

Hayne is widely regarded as one of rugby league's best young players.  His excellent try scoring ability saw him rewarded with the 2006 Dally M 'Rookie of the Year' award and a spot on the Kangaroos Squad.

Mark Gasnier has been named sole captain of the Dragons for the current 2008 season.  The 26-year old is the nephew of Dragons' Immortal Reg Gasnier.

Parramatta has the second shortest odds to win the NRL 2008 Season at 7/1
