NBA Finals: Payout Odds Could be Significant

Imagine if you will payout possibilities of $1000 for every $1 bet.  This is the scenario we could be looking at with the NBA Finals as early payout odds featured some of the juiciest numbers that today have relevance.

Case in point: The Atlanta Hawks opened the season as +12500 long shots to win the 2008 NBA Championship.  Already they were making it a contest with the Eastern powerhouse Boston Celtics Tuesday, going 2-3 in the season.  And while the Celtics looked to close things out, the dream of a massive pay day was still on the minds of a few diehard fans.

The New Orleans Hornets have already advanced to the next round after beating a heavily favored Dallas Mavericks team.   In fact, the Mavs were listed with early 3 to 1 odds of winning the 2008 NBA Championship, paying only $3 for every $1 bet.  The Hornets would pay out $610 for every $1 bet and $6010 for every $100 bet if they were to go all the way.  Their win has led to the firing of Dallas coach Avery Johnson Wednesday.

Another early favorite to win it all - Phoenix - looks to be on the ropes against San Antonio.

Even the Los Angels Lakers paid promised a payout of $3800 for every $100 bet if they could win a championship, having swept the Denver Nuggets in the first round.

But when we look at extremes, look no further than the Philadelphia 76ers, who managed to creep into the NBA Finals playing the red hot Detroit Pistons.  And while the 76ers may be down 2-3 in the series, they have held their own and the odds of winning a championship would pay out a remarkable $20,000 for every $100 bet early in the season.
