BetOnline.ag provides the proposition odds and like we did with the ‘First Coach to Be Fired’ Analysis we’ll split this into multiple parts.  In Part 1, we looked in depth at some of the ‘past performance data’ surrounding the AP NFL Coach of the Year Award and gave out our top choice on Indianapolis Colts’ head coach Frank Reich.  In this preview, we’ll hit a couple more choices that look to be solid values at higher prices.

Pete Carroll is arguably the most underrated head coach in the National Football League.  Actually, you can go even deeper than that—he might be the most underrated NFL head coach of the past generation.  Maybe Carroll doesn’t get the props he deserves for his NFL career simply because he was so good at the collegiate level.  Carroll’s college coaching accomplishments border on the absurd starting with this 97-19 record for a mere .836 winning percentage.  Most of the rankings of all time best college football coaching win percentage stipulate a minimum of 10 years—Carroll coached only 9 at USC—but that notwithstanding .836 puts him in the top 20 of all time.  Throw in 7 consecutive AP Top 4 finishes, six BCS bowl victories, a record 33 straight weeks as the AP #1 ranked college team, a 34 game winning streak, 4 Rose Bowl wins, 2 Orange Bowl wins, 7 Pac 10 titles and a NCAA record of 63 straight 20 point games and his resume matches up with anyone in college coaching history.

Many people don’t realize that Carroll coached in the NFL for four years before he took over at USC.  He went 6-10 in one year as head coach of the NY Jets and 27-21 in three years as the New England Patriots’ head coach.  Combined with his ‘decade of domination’ at USC his run as the head coach in Seattle is downright unprecedented.  The prevailing wisdom is that head coaches can only excel at one level.  Only the best coaches can transcend this and Carroll is in a very small and elite club as one of only three coaches to win both a Super Bowl and National Championship along with Barry Switzer and Jimmy Johnson.

The consistent excellence he’s achieved during his run with the Seattle Seahawks is extremely impressive.  All he's done since arriving in the ‘Jet City’ is win a Super Bowl, make the playoffs 7 times in his 9 season and win games at a .620 clip.  He also was the mastermind behind the ‘Legion of Boom’ defense that led the NFL in scoring defense for four straight years becoming the first team in over 60 years to do so.  Bruce Arians won the 'Coach of the Year Award' during the Seahawks' Super Bowl winning year in 2014.  Should the Seahawks win the NFC West and/or win a few playoff games Carroll could finally get the recognition he deserves.  It’s downright mind boggling that he’s never won this award and could get a de facto career achievement award at a great price.

Carroll may have the distinction of being the most underappreciated NFL coach in the long term but McDermott can make a compelling case for being the most underappreciated current coach.  He’s entering the third year of his run at Buffalo—his first head coaching gig—and already has the distinction of taking the Bills to the playoffs in 2017 for the first time in 18 years. The Buffalo Bills took a step back in McDermott's second year at the helm but they did a lot to upgrade the team in the offseason. He was smart enough to add Ken Dorsey to the staff as quarterbacks coach which will only help Josh Allen. The Bills' defense in particular looks very good and could be the most improved in the league. If Buffalo posts a solid winning season McDermott would be a viable candidate at a hefty price.
