One of the first thing you learn about baseball betting is the importance of the starting pitcher.  Even though bullpens also play a big part in today’s game, the baseball moneyline is based on the starting pitcher.  For that reason, we also chart the pitchers that earn the most profit for bettors—as well as the ones that lose the most money.  Statistical information is inclusive of all action through Saturday, September 28.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL BETTING:  MOST PROFITABLE PITCHERS

EDUARDO RODRIGUEZ (BOSTON): +16.5 UNITS

Red Sox ace Eduardo Rodriguez has 19 wins on the season and where would Boston be without him?  More appropriately, where would Boston bettors be without him?  The Red Sox were one of the biggest money losers as a team dropping -27.9 units.  Even with this miserable performance, Rodriguez managed to compile the best ‘profit/loss statement’ of any MLB pitcher.  Boston has won 83 games to date and Rodriguez has started nearly 1/3 of those wins.  The Red Sox are 25-8 when he takes the mound.  Rodriguez earned 11 units at home (#2 in the Majors) and added +5.5 units on the road.

DOMINGO GERMAN (NY YANKEES): +13.6 UNITS

The Yankees had very little trouble in winning the AL East this year and the performance of right hander Domingo German was a big part of that.  German has a record of 16-4 and the Yankees are 19-5 when he takes the mound.  German’s ERA is a not particularly impressive 4.28 but that notwithstanding he and his teammates took care of business during his starts.  German won +7.2 units at Yankee Stadium and added another +6.4 units on the road.

BRANDON WOODRUFF (MILWAUKEE): +13.1 UNITS

Brandon Woodruff started 22 games this season for the Milwaukee Brewers and they won 81.8% of them.  That’s the highest winning percentage in the majors for a pitcher with more than 20 starts.  Woodruff is 11-3 and the Brewers are 18-4 when he takes the mound good for +13.1 units of profit.  Woodruff did most of his work at Miller Park where Milwaukee went 13-2 in his starts for +11 units of profit.  He wasn’t as good on the road but Milwaukee won 6 of his 9 away starts and he scratched out +2.1 units away from home.

JORDAN LYLES (MILWAUKEE) +11.1 UNITS

Right behind Woodruff is teammate Jordan Lyles.  Lyles was acquired from Pittsburgh midseason during a stretch when they had several starters sidelined with injury and he turned in some good work.  Between Pittsburgh and Milwaukee, Lyles’ teams went 18-10 when he started and unlike his teammate did his best on the road.  At home, Lyles’ teams were 8-6 +2.3 units but on the road they were 10-4 +8.9 units which gives Lyles the #3 road profits in Major League Baseball.

MIKE FIERS (OAKLAND): +11.1 UNITS

Veteran righthander Mike Fiers is still getting it done for the Oakland Athletics and still cashing tickets for baseball bettors.  Oakland was 22-11 in Fiers’ starts this season.  Almost all of Fiers YTD profits have come on the A’s home field.  They were 13-3 in his home starts for +10.2 units of profit.  On the road, Oakland was 9-8 in Fiers’ starts though he did manage to scrap out a +0.9 unit profit away from home.

MAX FRIED (ATLANTA):  +10.9 UNITS

Max Fried won’t catch Stephen Strasburg for the National League wins lead but he does have a very impressive 17-6 mark this year.  Atlanta is 22-8 when he starts which put +10.9 units of profit into the bankrolls of his ‘financial backers’.  The 25 year old lefthander made money both at home and on the road.  At home, Atlanta was 11-4 when Fried started for +4.8 units for profit.  On the road, they were 11-4 as well in Fried’s starts picking up +6.1 units of profit in the process.

Next up, we’ll look at the pitchers who lost the most money during the 2019 Major League Baseball season.
