The New York Mets’ season-long 11-game road trip got off to a less than ideal start when they dropped two of three to division rival Atlanta. The second stop on the journey takes place Thursday in the opener of a four-game set against the NL Central leading Chicago Cubs.

Odds Analysis

This is an interesting matchup three months into the regular season with both starters having combined for just one start. Injuries to key starters forced both clubs to look in a different direction. The Mets placed Noah Syndergaard on the IL with Chicago’s Kyle Hendricks joining him. The Mets are hoping a new face can lift them from their recent funk. They are just 3-6 in their last nine games and they haven’t won a road series since the first week of April. Since then the Mets are 0-9-2 with a combined record of 10-24.

The Cubs enter the series with the same ledger over their last nine games as the Mets. The difference is that Chicago is in first place in the Central. They swept the Cardinals at home two weeks ago, but failed to sustain that momentum on the road losing five of seven games to the Rockies and Dodgers. The Cubbies have made up for their poor road play by posting the second-best home record in the NL. The Cubs earned a split by dropping their cross-town rivals on Wednesday, improving to 7-2 at Wrigley over their last nine games.

Probable Pitchers

Making his Mets debut on Thursday, Walker Lockett looks for better results at the big league level. Acquired in a deal with Cleveland during the offseason, Lockett missed a chunk of the season with an arm injury. He appeared in four games making three starts with San Diego last year, compiling a 9.60 ERA across 15 innings.

All of his work this season has taken place in the minors. He posted a 3.28 ERA in four outings at Triple-A Syracuse. Lockett has three pitches, including a low-90s heater, curveball and change. His problem in San Diego was control, issuing 10 walks in his 15 innings. He’s been better in the minors and the Mets are hopeful that carries over. “He’s been throwing the ball over the plate. This is going to be his opportunity to show what he can do,” Mickey Callaway said.

The Cubs turn to veteran Tyler Chatwood ( 3-1, 3.60 ERA ) for a spot start. He got the call back on April 21 and tossed 6.0 shutout innings giving up only two hits to Arizona. He was denied a win when the pen coughed up the lead. Signed to a big free agent contract before last season, Chatwood has been relegated to long relief for much of his stay due to injuries and poor pitching.

Over his past 15 games Chatwood has compiled a 2.87 ERA and Joe Maddon isn’t hesitant to use his righty. “He’s been pitching a lot better. He came here for a specific reason. We believe he’s earned the right to pitch in this situation,” the Cubs manager said. Chatwood has started eight times against the Mets going 3-2 with a 4.17 ERA.

Player to Watch

He’s not your typical leadoff hitter. But there’s nothing typical about the game. The experiment of using Kyle Schwarber at the top of the order backfired on Maddon in 2017, but he’s not one of the best in the game for nothin folks. Turning to Schwarber again this season has rendered better results, but not the kind you’d think. In a span of five games Schwarber has taken the first pitch out of the yard twice. He has four leadoff homers and 11 of his 16 long balls have come while batting first in the order. The plan isn’t to get him on base for Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez. The plan is to put runs on the board before those guys get to the dish.

Putting up a sub-4.00 ERA in the minors is one thing, doing it at the big league level is another. It’s hard to tell what we’ll see from Lockett, but at least the Cubs are one of the few teams to hit against him. Boosted by homers from Rizzo and Schwarber, the Cubs tallied nine hits and five runs off Lockett last season. We won’t see either starter go deep and both bullpens have been a crapshoot. Given the offensive firepower on the field, I’ll lean toward the over in a Cubs victory.

MLB Score Prediction: Cubs 7, Mets 5
