Arizona Senator John McCain has mounted an amazing comeback within the Republican party. CNN has projected McCain as the winner in the New Hampshire Republican Primary. Meanwhile, on the Democratic side, there was somewhat of an early surprise as Hillary Clinton had been leading Barack Obama with nearly 15% of the precincts reporting in. John Edwards was already projected to take third among Democrats. With the Republicans, Mitt Romney enjoyed a large enough cushion where he was likely to come in second. Mike Huckabee came in with 12% while Rudy Giuliani and Ron Paul were in a tight horse race for 4th early on. The vote difference between Giuliani and Paul were at times under 100. McCain won in New Hampshire in 2000 but there was some concern that Mitt Romney would cut into that vote count since Romney governed a neighbor state, Massachusetts. CNN stats suggest that McCain did not win the Primary because of issues but instead based on personal attachment to those in the state. John McCain's odds to become the next US President had been slashed to 7/2 coming into the New Hampshire primaries, ahead of Mike Huckabee, who won in Iowa. Hillary Clinton was still a favorite to become the next President, slightly ahead of Barack Obama. ---- Christopher Costigan, Gambling911.com Publisher CCostigan@CostiganMedia.com Originally published January 8, 2008 8:36 pm EST
