John McCain Will Win Michigan Primaries Say Oddsmakers

The New Hampshire primaries have not even taken place yet, but already oddsmakers and online gamblers alike have their money on John McCain to win Michigan.

McCain, the Republican Senator from Arizona who is campaigning to become the next President of the United States, has had his odds slashed in two of the upcoming primaries: New Hampshire and Michigan, both of which he is now the favorite to win.

In Michigan, it's an all out fight between McCain, Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani.  The later two both have odds of +200 (for a potential payout of $200 for every $100 bet).  McCain would pay $140 for every $100 bet, making him the slight favorite.

Mike Huckabee is listed at +500.  Ron Paul is listed at +2500.  Fred Thompson is listed at +2500.

This is certainly great news for the McCain campaign, which was left for dead only one month ago.  The odds being slashed comes on the heels of a ringing endorsement of McCain from the Detroit Free Press.

"He's a straight shooter, sometimes to his detriment in the political world, where McCain also loses points for persistently championing needed campaign reforms and criticizing pork-barrel spending that benefits special interests," the newspaper said in an editorial published Sunday.

The newspaper noted that it endorsed McCain eight years ago. McCain won Michigan's 2000 GOP primary and could draw blue-collar Democrats in this year's election, since many of the Democratic candidates are not on the Michigan ballot.
