Javier Bardem Favorite to Win Best Actor With -1300 Odds

Is Javier Barden a "lock" to win Best Actor for his performance in No Country for Old Men?  Some would say "Yes".  Certainly the online gambling websites that have him listed at -1300 odds would.

Javier Ángel Encinas Bardem (born March 1, 1969) is a two-time Academy Award-nominated, Golden Globe-, SAG- and BAFTA Award- winning Spanish actor. He has made over two dozen films in his native country, but became an international star with his starring role in the critically acclaimed Before Night Falls. With this role, he became the first Spanish actor to receive an Academy Award nomination. Bardem won the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award and BAFTA for his performance in No Country For Old Men, and was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 80th Academy Awards.

"Javier Bardem has crafted one of the most evil characters that we have seen on the silver screen and will be rewarded with the Oscar. No questions. No doubts," predicts Benjamin Eckstein of The Province

"Bardem is nothing less than the best movie villain since Anthony Hopkins slipped out of Hannibal Lecter's manacles, scary-smart and horrifyingly appealing," writes Terry Lawson of Free Movie Critic.

In this film, Bardem plays Anton Chigurh, a professional hitman, has been hired to retrieve the satchel of money (which contains a hidden radio transponder to which Chigurh has the corresponding receiver). Chigurh does not hesitate to kill those in his way, including those closely associated with the drug deal, the drivers of cars he steals for transportation, and people he encounters by chance.

No Country For Old Men is more violent than any movie that the Coens have ever made, according to Lawson.

"Its images, unlike the graphic grabbers that arrive nearly every weekend with he latest torture-horror exploiter, are not easily filed away and forgotten. It will be a long time before I get the picture of Anton doing some self-surgery out of my troubled mind."

Not surprisingly the bookies have No Country for Old Men, The Coen Brothers - Ethan and Joel, and Bardem all big favorites to win as part of this production.  The Coen's, who directed No Country for Old Men, are much smaller favorites than Bardem, however, with -350 odds to win.  There Will Be Blood is the next most likely to win among oddsmakers with a payout potential of $400 for every $100 bet at Bookmaker.com

No Country For Old Men has already won the Producers Guild of America Award, the Screen Actors' Guild Award and the Directors Guild of America Award for best film of the year.

Betting on the Academy Awards has become huge business.  Gambling911.com is predicting that millions of dollars will be wagered on the event before starting time next Sunday.
