Heading into this coming week, Japan is being overlooked in a big way with their odds of winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup set at 150-1 despite making it into the knockout stage Round of 16.  The payout should Japan win the World Cup would be $15,000 on a $100 bet currently.

Japan beat Colombia, drew with Senegal and lost to Poland 0-1 Thursday.

Japan's long odds are a result of how they made it into the knockout stage, a la yellow cards.

Japan advancing is a combination of the team having had four yellow cards in the group stage versus Senegal having six.  This is the first time such a tie-breaker has ever been used to advance a team to the Round of 16.

But Colombia is also in the knockout stage.  There is no questioning that team's ability.  And yet they did lose to Japan in the first game of the tournament.
