Billionaire Throws Shade At Bitcoin In Call To Build Casinos Like Apple

Billionaire Ted Leonsis, chief executive officer of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, says he intends to to turn his burgeoning sports empire, into a gambling empire.

He is the current owner of the WNBA champions, the Washington Mystics, and NHL championship-winning Washington Capitals.

Leonsis has stated that he would like to see sports betting take place in the Washington arenas.

“By opening up a world-class sportsbook, the building will come alive during the day,” said Leonsis. “We want to be able to take advantage of the investment we have in real estate.”

Leonsis last month signed a deal with United Kingdom bookmaker William Hill to provide gambling venues in his stadium.

"The gamification of all sporting events is a very positive thing."

"It will take an industry in an unregulated untaxed dark space and bring it into the light."

Leonsis notes that he believes sports betting is more a game of skill compared to a game of chance like slots and video poker.

“Let’s take this shadow economy which is going to explode even more with bitcoin and the dark web, and bring it into the light,” said Leonsis, alluding to the cryptocurrency used by some to make illicit transactions online. “And if we can do that it will generate more jobs, it will generate tax revenues.”
