The big question on everyone's mind:  Can Germany win its first Euro 2008 since 1996?

At 4.50 odds (7/2), they are the favorites, paying €700 for every €200 bet.

Captain Michael Ballack has come forward and made some statements concerning his team. He is confident that his team can rediscover their form and has spoken to them about taking the Euro task forward and not living in the days of the World Cup.

Ballack acknowledged there were concerns but said there was no need to panic.

“I was asked about this back in January when it seemed almost all the team had some problem or other,” the midfielder told a news conference.

“Back then I said they would all get fitter as the tournament got closer but we’re two months on now and the situation is not actually that different.”

This was said before their friendly with Switzerland, a game they ultimately won this past weekend by 4-0.

Spain, Italy and Portugal all have single digit odds of winning the Euro 2008.

Euro 2008 is happening throughout much of the month of June.  Switzerland and Austria will play host. Neither Great Britain, Wales, Ireland, Scotland nor Northern Ireland have managed to qualify for the Championship.

According to John Dykes of the Bangkok Post, economists have warned that the British economy might lose up to 2 billion in potential revenue due to their absence, while commercial broadcaster ITV could miss out on up to 10m in advertising revenue.

"Indeed, broadcasters the world over - both rights holders and non-rights holders - have been losing sleep ever since that wretched Wembley defeat to Croatia."

British bookmakers may not be losing any sleep over the exclusion since most country folk would have a tendency to bet on their national team.  The idea of a Great Britain win could prove catastrophic to some bookies.  Then again, it has become pretty obvious that England doesn't have the best team so the books would probably turn a profit, unless of course this is indeed "The Year of the Underdog" (witness the New York Giants NFL team).  The British will probably still bet on Euro 2008 regardless.  After all, what else where there be to bet on this summer?  And they would be helping their economy as well!

A total of 16 teams will participate in the tournament. Austria and Switzerland will automatically qualify as hosts; The remaining 14 teams have been determined through qualifying matches which started in August 2006. Austria and Poland will be making their first appearance in the tournament. The winner of Euro 2008 will represent the UEFA at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup.
