Ellen Page Oscar Odds at +530 as Canada Prepares to Take Home Award

Canada's own, Ellen Page, has been nominated for an Oscar this year for her role in Juno.  At +530 odds (a $1.00 bet pays out $5.30), the "Best Actress" category is much tighter than some of the other Academy Awards inclusions such as "Best Actor" where Daniel Day-Lewis is such a huge favorite.

The Canadian Press has heralded its representatives at this year's Oscars:

There will be a strong Canuck contingent at the show.

Halifax actress Ellen Page has a best actress nomination for "Juno" while the film's director, Montreal-born Jason Reitman, is also up for a trophy. Toronto's Sarah Polley, meanwhile, could take home a screenwriting Oscar for her directorial debut "Away From Her."

The Canadian nominees in the sound mixing category - B.C. native Craig Berkey, David Giammarco of Welland, Ont., and one-time Torontonian Paul Massey - were among those feted Thursday night at a soiree for the sound nominees in Burbank.

Berkey is nominated for his work on best picture frontrunner "No Country for Old Men" while Massey and Giammarco are squaring off against him for their work on the Russell Crowe movie "3:10 to Yuma."

It's Massey's sixth Oscar nomination.

"It never gets old, obviously," Massey said as he enjoyed a beer on an uncharacteristically rainy night in L.A. "It's truly a great honour because you're nominated by your peers, by people who know sound."

Berkey said he was still pinching himself, not just about the nomination but about working with two of Hollywood's most respected and innovative filmmakers.

"Working with the Coen brothers was fantastic," he said. "They know what they're doing, that's for sure, and they know all about sound and they gave opportunities to us to do really interesting things."

The sound nominees were to join other Canucks nominated for Oscars at a luncheon Friday afternoon at the Canadian consulate.

Other nominees in the "Best Actress" category included:

CATE BLANCHETT (ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE) +2000 - -

JULIE CHRISTIE (AWAY FROM HER) -310 - -

MARION COTILLARD (LA VIE EN ROSE) +225 - -

LAURA LINNEY (THE SAVAGES) +2000 - -

ELLEN PAGE (JUNO) +525
