David Cook
Favored to Win
American Idol
As
expected, David Cook
was made the
favorite to win next
week's finale of
American Idol.
If so, he would be
crowned the 7th Idol
during the show's
incredible run.
Paddy Power
- an Irish online
bookmaker that does
not accept bets from
US citizens - was
the first to offer
up odds on the
show's season
finale.
Cook
they posted with 2/5
odds, requiring a
US$5 bet to win
US$2. A win by
Cook would result in
the initial wager
being paid back,
similar to how
sports wagering
works.
Bodog Life
followed quickly
Thursday morning.
Archuleta +150
($1.50 paid out for
every $1.00 bet)
Cook
-200 (Bet $2 to win
$1 and get your $2
back if Cook wins)
And these lines of
since moved.
Cook was bumped up
to a -350 favorite
by noon Thursday.
Archuleta now paid
$2.25 for every
$1.00 bet.
David
Archuleta - the
crooner with the
baby looks (probably
because he is still
a baby) - would pay
out US$7 for every
US$4 bet.
Archuleta had been
the favorite to win
American Idol since
Day One but Cook
consistently
demonstrated
originality with his
arrangements, mostly
of rock songs or
tunes that he
converted to rock
songs (i.e. Michael
Jackson's Billie
Jean).
Cook
was born in Houston,
Texas and raised in
Blue Springs,
Missouri. Cook's
interest in music
began early in life;
he received his
first guitar at the
age of 2. He began
singing in second
grade, when his
elementary school
music teacher gave
him a solo in a
school choir
performance. He
proceeded to perform
in virtually every
Christmas and PTA
program.
David
Archuleta, at the
age of twelve, won
the Junior Singers
competition on Star
Search.
Archuleta started
singing when he was
six because he was
inspired by Les
Misérables
10th-anniversary
concert: Live at the
Royal Albert Hall
video (starring Colm
Wilkinson, Lea
Salonga and others)
he was watching,
"That musical is
what started all of
this." He started
performing as an
entertainer at ten
years old when he
participated in the
Utah Talent
Competition singing
"I Will Always Love
You" by Dolly Parton;
he received a
standing ovation,
and won the kid
division.
Both
have a family member
who - for better or
for worse - is
providing some
reason for
sympathizing with
either Idol wannabe.
David Cook's brother
has brain cancer and
has been a driving
force for his
success on the show
and desire to become
the next American
Idol. David
Archuleta's dad is
being compared to
Joan Crawford from
"Mommy Dearest" fame
for his meddling in
backstage affairs,
ultimately resulting
in Idol producers
ordering him to stay
clear of the
backstage.
