Thinking on betting David Archuleta to win this year's American Idol? Don't take too long thinking. At -150, which is almost even odds, Archuleta is still a bargain after his fantastic performance Tuesday night. A $1.50 bet pays $1.00 and you would get back that initial $1.50 if David Archuleta were to win. At this point in time he almost looks like a lock. Big Juicy is one of the latest online gambling websites to post odds on American Idol. More great news, they still had them up during the performance shows. Michael Slezak of Entertainment Weekly writes of David Archuleta: The judges adore him. The tweens in the audience can't stop screaming for him. And, perhaps most remarkable of all, he doesn't give off that whiff of creepiness that too often clings to youthful performers — you know, the forced maturity, the soulless ambition, the ability to come up with a polished but uninteresting sound bite the minute the cameras start rolling. And the folks from MTV should know a thing or two about music.
While Cowell
prefaced his praise
by saying that
Archuleta's decision
to tackle John
Lennon's "Imagine"
was "very, very
risky to do," he
admitted it "worked"
and added that
"right now, you're
the one to beat."
Likewise, judge
Randy Jackson dubbed
the performance "one
of the best vocals
I've ever heard on
the show," and a
teary Paula Abdul
called it "one of
the most moving
performances I've
ever heard," adding
that the young
singer is "destined
for superstardom,"
as she dabbed her
eyes. Gambling911.com has pegged Archuleta to win American Idol, but make no mistake about it, there is competition. This is one of the best seasons of the show yet. We already know that Michael Johns is more than capable of turning out a great performance. Another David - David Hernandez - stunned us with a solid performance. And yet another David - David Cook - appears to be the "authentic" rocker in this battle. True what judge Simon Cowell said about Cook's "lack of Charisma" but the Idol makeovers have proven dramatic over the years (witness Elliott Yamin). ---- Jordan Bach, Gambling911.com Originally published February 27 2008 4:28 pm EST
