Following wise guys this college football season has proven to be a profitable endeavor. And buying games at the right time also helps stock the bankroll. That was the case last week in a few games that we tracked. Keeping up with the sharps isn’t always easy, but if you can decipher where the money is going there is a good chance you can win some coin. That’s why it pays to pay close attention to the line moves and the handle. They don’t always get the games right, but that’s what makes wagering so exciting.

A late Saturday night Mountain West tilt saw sharp money and it was a winner for wise guys. Scooping up Wyoming at +5 turned into a winning ticket since the Cowboys ended up losing 26-22 to San Diego State. The action on Wyoming forced the line down and waiting to throw down on that game would have produced a loser with a spread of +3.5. Sometimes the early bird does get the worm. Timing was everything in the LSU-Florida matchup. Buying the Gators at +14 wasn’t a winner, but it didn’t lose either since the teams pushed in LSU’s 42-28 win. Waiting to buy the Gators would have resulted in baby not getting a new pair of shoes.

The Week 8 college football schedule offers up some great betting opportunities and we’ll take a look at a few games where sharp money has impacted the line. College Football Week 8 Wise Guy Picks

Marshall at Florida Atlantic ( 57 ), Friday, Oct. 18, 6:30 p.m. ET

Books had to do an about face on the total for this game. Sometimes oddsmakers are completely off with an opening number that a quick change is needed. I can’t see that being the case for this Conference USA matchup. It’s not considered a marquee tilt and there isn’t enough money to force an 8-point drop in the total. So there is only one explanation, and that’s sharp action on the under. The Owls are perched atop the C-USA East standings with Marshall just a game back, so there is a level of importance to this one.

While neither team lights it up offensively this season, they play pretty good defense. FAU played five games with a total higher than 63 and the Owls are even at 2-2-1. Marshall’s one game with a total that closed above 60 resulted in the under cashing. It’s not always the SEC or Big Ten games that grab the attention of wise guys. When the number is right expect them to sniff it out.

Purdue at Iowa ( -18 ), Saturday, Oct. 19, 12 p.m. ET

Okay, sometimes it is a SEC or Big Ten game that grabs the attention of wise guys. While the public overreacts to Iowa’s two straight losses and pitiful offensive showing against Michigan and Penn State, sharps know exactly where their bread is buttered. Over 60 of the public jumped on Purdue when the line surfaced at Boilers +16.5. Instead of some pull back the number jumped to -18, a clear sign that wise guys have the Hawkeyes’ back.

That public overreaction is a bit premature since Iowa played two of the strongest defensive teams in the Big Ten. And the Hawkeyes are right there with them. Purdue had a minor breakthrough against what’s become a bad Maryland team and the Boilers are still without their top two offensive threats in Elijah Sindelar and Rondale Moore. And let’s not forget that Purdue has a loss to Nevada on its resume. Iowa will have to score to cover the line, but that’s much easier against the 105th ranked total defense.

Kansas at Texas ( -21.5 ), Saturday, Oct. 19, 7 p.m. ET

If anything at least Les Miles has people talking about Kansas football. Unfortunately, it’s not because of their play on the field. The Jayhawks are still a train wreck but Miles is holding people in the program accountable. And he won wise guys some money a few weeks ago when sharps backed the Jayhawks in a cover win against Oklahoma. Getting 24-points on the road against Texas after a bye was tempting to a majority of the public who grabbed KU. And what happened? The line dropped to +21.5. Again, it looks like sharps are backing the Mad Hatter.

While the Jayhawks are still losing they aren’t getting steamrolled by teams, which I guess is a sign of progress. And there’s always the emotional time right after a coach gets replaced. Offensive coordinator Les Koenning was fired last week and the Jayhawks will play their first game under new O-boss Brent Dearmon, who Miles said is “one of the brightest individuals” he’s ever encountered.
