None of these states operate online poker rooms within their borders at this time. Americas Cardroom allows individuals to hone their skills for free should they not wish to play for real money at the onset.  They can practice on their website and start playing at one of the local live poker rooms where available.

Mississippi is among the most gambling-friendly states, so much so that they just legalized online sports betting, allowing sportsbooks to operate inside the state.  Those wishing to bet online can only do so at the gambling venues.

Mississippi poker rooms:

    Ameristar Casino Vicksburg (Vicksburg, MS)
Beau Rivage Resort & Casino (Biloxi, MS)
    Golden Nugget Biloxi (Biloxi, MS)
Hollywood Casino Bay Saint Louis (Bay St. Louis, MS)
    Hollywood Casino Tunica (Robinsonville, MS)
    Horseshoe Casino Tunica (Robinsonville, MS)
    IP Casino Biloxi (Biloxi, MS)
    Magnolia Bluffs Casino (Natchez, MS)
    Pearl River Resort (Philadelphia, MS)

Louisiana is another state that welcomes gambling operators, though no Internet poker rooms are located in the state.

Boomtown Casino New Orleans (Harvey, LA)
    Coushatta Casino (Kinder, LA)
    Cypress Bayou Casino (Charenton, LA)
    Eldorado Casino Shreveport (Shreveport, LA)
Golden Nugget Lake Charles (Lake Charles, LA)
Harrah's New Orleans (New Orleans, LA)
Horseshoe Casino Bossier City (Bossier City, LA)
Isle of Capri Casino Lake Charles (Westlake, LA)
Jena Choctaw Pines Casino (Dry Prong, LA)
L'Auberge Casino Baton Rouge (Baton Rouge, LA)
L'Auberge Casino Lake Charles (Lake Charles, LA)
    Paragon Casino (Marksville, LA)

Alabama and South Carolina are not particularly friendly towards gambling.

Americas Cardroom is one of the few sites that has long served the U.S. market and is currently offering a $5 million guaranteed online tournament with a $1 million first place prize.  Americas Cardroom tends to rank as the 8th largest online poker site in the world.  It also offers a sportsbook and online casino.  Keep in mind, you can also play for free to hone yours poker skills, especially if just starting out.
