Blackjack Arrives at Seminole Hard Rock

Attention South Florida residents!  You can now play blackjack at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel.

It all began at 6:21 pm Sunday with an announcement from Michael Buffer who shouted out "Let's get ready to gamble!"

And they soon did.

Blackjack is rolling at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The Sun Sentinel reported that players lined up three and four deep at the casino's 55 blackjack tables, waiting to play on what Seminole Tribe CEO James Allen called "a historic day."

"For many, many years the tribe has pursued this dream, and tonight we fulfill our goal," he said. He referred to the compact the Tribe and Gov. Charlie Crist reached last fall, allowing the Tribe exclusive rights to table card games in exchange for at least $100 million a year to the state.

For a state that has been slow to grab a larger share of the $50 billion-plus U.S. casino industry, the arrival of blackjack is a big deal, writes Charles Passy of the Palm Beach Post.

"Machines are a real sucker's game," Phyllis Oaks, a Sunny Isles Beach resident who was one of the casino regulars getting the VIP treatment, told the Post.

But this can't be good for Vegas, which has been reeling in recent months from economic woes associated with individuals scrapping their vacations.  Even those who might have found it easy to drive can no longer afford the price of gas to Vegas.   The Seminole Hard Rock Casino is conveniently located in one of the most populous regions of the country and the price of gas is nominal.

Also making their debut: baccarat, three-card poker and other table games that also made their debut at the Hard Rock on Sunday.
