Former BetonSports CEO David Carruthers Speaks at Barcelona Online Gambling ConferenceThe former BetonSports CEO, David Carruthers, presently under house arrest received a rousing round of applause and Conference organizer Sue Schneider even got a bit choked up at the end.
"I'm one year older and ten years wiser," said Carruthers.
And while David Carruthers wasn't actually physically present at the 6th annual i-Gaming Expo and Conference in Barcelona Tuesday, Schneider read a letter from the imprisoned online gambling exec. His message was motivating and, as we here at Gambling911.com have been saying all along, it appears Carruthers has no intention of backing down from the US government.
In July 2006, David Carruthers was arrested while changing planes in Dallas Fort Worth. Indictments were then handed down against him and nearly a dozen other management personnel of what had been the number two largest online sports betting company. Carruthers, a British national, was later released on house arrest while he awaits trial. BetonSports founder, Gary Kaplan, was declined bail over the weekend.
"I am in the best physical shape of my adult life," Carruthers reassured the online gambling community.
Carruthers is also declining all interview requests until after trial, which be believes will take place some time in Spring or Summer of 2008. He also expressed confidence about his case.
"The (online gambling) industry jumped the red light at the cross roads and got stuck in the round about and is not sure how to exit. The industry needs to have strong leadership. It needs to pull together successfully and move forward towards regulation and leadership."
Schneider, who resides in St. Louis where Carruthers is being held in a local hotel under house arrest, regularly visits with the former BetonSports CEO. He also thanked his family and close friends for all the support they have provided him during these rough times.
