Barack Obama Wins in Iowa Democratic Caucuses

It may be close but CNN has announced that Senator Barack Obama wins the Iowa Democratic caucuses.  Obama was listed with 5/1 odds of becoming the next US President coming into this caucus while Hillary Clinton was listed with slightly better than even odds.

Clinton and Edwards were in a dead heat tie for second place Thursday night.

This is a setback for Hillary, who is presently listed as a slight favorite to win New Hampshire.

While Edwards performed well in Iowa, he is said to have limited resources and could still drop out after New Hampshire.

African American candidate Barack Obama beat Hillary Clinton in a state that is 95% White, an incredible feat.

Obama, who if elected would become the first African-American president, has put himself in the running to win today's caucuses by stressing his willingness to reach across political divides and calling for an end to partisan vitriol, according to Martin C. Evans of Newsday.

"We can't have the same partisan food fight," Obama said yesterday.

He has mostly avoided polarizing allusions to racial strife that energized presidential bids of Jesse Jackson in 1988 and Al Sharpton in 2004.

"What is fascinating is Obama is not running on identity politics, he is attempting to transcend that," said Drake University professor Dennis Goldford. "It has allowed him to have greater appeal."

CNN had projected a Mike Huckabee win quite early on the Republican side.
