Who is Andres Romero? Another Argentina Player Makes Noise at Golf Open

Football was knocked off the top of the sports page by golf when this year's US Open winner Angel Cabrera arrived home in his Native Argentina to a hero's welcome, and now all interest shifts to 26-year old Andres Romero.

Romero led heading into the final play of the 2007 British Open.  The relative unknown (compared to pro Angel Cabrera) was listed as a "field" option by bookmakers who were most certainly hoping for a Romero win.

Online Bookmaker BetCRIS.com offered a "field" choice at 3 to 1 odds.

So who is Andres Romero?

Romero was born in Tucumán. He won his tour card by finishing 14th on the Challenge Tour rankings in 2005. He had a successful rookie season highlighted by a tied second finish at the Scottish Open and a tied eighth finish in The Open Championship, and finished placed 35th on the Order of Merit.

In July 2006 he broke into the top 100 of the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time.

"Romero is making a huge name for himself and will be celebrated in Argentina no matter where he finishes Sunday," says Don Shapiro of Sports911.com.
