American Idol Performance Night - April 8

Carrie Stroup here for Gambling911.com with the American Idol performance night for April 8.

The theme this week was "Songs that are inspirational" in honor of Idol Gives Back, which will air Wednesday night.  Remember, American Idol results come out on Thursday this week.

American Idol kicked off with Michael Johns covering Aerosmith "Dream On".  Randy Jackson didn't care for it.  Paula Abdul completely disagreed and I gotta tell you, sounded just like Aerosmith.  So Simon's opinion: "I thought it was a very good performance but I don't like it when you do an impersonation of a rock star, a little bit 'wannabeish'" - if that is a word.

Syesha Mercado with 20 - 1 odds was singing an American Idol winners song.  Not sure if that was a wise decision at first as there were bound to be comparisons with Fantasia's "I Believe".   Well, I liked it a lot.  Randy did the comparison - saying he did not think "she connected like Fantasia".  Paula said that "not too many people can take on Fantasia" and thought it was one of her shining nights.  Simon felt she sang it very well but thought it lacked that big wave of emotion.  "I want to find out who YOU are all about".  He reiterated that she sang it very well.  Think my girl is back another week.

Jason Castro was up next singing "Over The Rainbow" - a non-traditional version of the song.  It's the song that nearly won it for Catherine McPhee.

"That was the hottest right there tonight," said Randy Jackson.

"It was the perfect song and I loved that version," said Paula Abdul.

"Fantastic!" said Simon.

Really originally in my opinion.  He'll stick around another week.  Martina McBride.

Kristy Lee Cook - Great song choice.  Randy loved it.  Paula said "I think you outdid yourself tonight.  Best by far."  And Simon also said "I thought you were very good indeed and tonight, you look like a star.  It was a smart choice of song."

Really impressed with Kristy tonight.

David Cook may not have had one of his strongest weeks according to Randy but I enjoyed it.  Paula loved it.  Simon did not like it very much at all.  "Thought it was a teeny weeny bit pompous".

Carly Smithson took on Freddy Mercury and the judges didn't feel the connection.  I tend to agree on that one.  Simon felt she over sang it and lost control over the end and came across as a "sort of angry performance".  Simon felt she could be in trouble after tonight.

Up next - David Archuleta looking like a little cutie pie.  I just want to squeeze those cheeks.

Tonight he played the piano and sounded fantastic.  He's not going anywhere this week.

"I'm Loving Angels" was the song he sang.  Beautiful.  I would download it (at iTunes).

Randy loved it.  Paula said "Fantastic" and Simon: "Best song choice of the night so far."  Simon was nitpicking a bit but admitted he was going to sail through to the next round.

Brooke White was closing the show with some Carole King.

Sang it well but "song choice".  Sounded nice but found it sorta boring.  Paula grew up to this song.  "One of my favorite songs growing up, and nice way to close out the evening."  Simon said it was "nice, pleasant walk in the park".
