Alliance of American Football has Bookies, Sportsbooks Licking Their Chops Following Strong Ratings

The Alliance of American Football scored big their first week, with ratings that were stronger than the National Basketball Association ABC national broadcast Saturday night that featured a matchup between two of that league's top teams, the Rockets and Thunder.

More than 2.9 million viewers tuned in to watch the league’s games that evening but it remains to be seen whether folks keep tuning in or whether they simply wanted to get a glimpse of what the AAF had to offer.

The league’s app was also No. 1 among sports apps in both Apple’s app store and Google Play (Android) on Sunday morning.

Bloomberg News reported:

Creating a football league in the shadow of the dominant National Football League is no easy task. Just ask backers of the XFL, which folded in 2001 after a single season. But the AAF, founded by TV producer Charlie Ebersol and longtime NFL executive Bill Polian, aims to capitalize on the down time after the Super Bowl -- and burgeoning interest in sports betting.

Not surprisingly, the number of viewers did drop significantly Sunday night with Arizona hosting Salt Lake on the NFL Network at 8 p.m. ET.  That game drew a 0.4 rating or approximately 408,000 viewers.  

It should be noted that the first night of games were broadcast on CBS.  Far fewer people nationwide have access to the NFL Network.

No idea about the streaming stuff but I think AAF is probably happy with a 0.4 overnight on NFLN and hoping for a tenth or two higher for games on TNT.

Eight teams will compete in the inaugural year.
