When it comes to Academy Awards betting, no online gambling website is created equal. It is important to study a handful of websites to determine which has the best payout odds for each category. Of particular focus would be both the "Best Actress" and the "Best Supporting Actress", each of which enjoys a tight race and therefore a decent size payout is more likely compared to say the "Best Actor" award where an upset would translate into a windfall but the odds are too heavy in Daniel Day-Lewis's favor. The "unofficial" favorite in the "Best Actress" category would be Julie Christie. Sportsbook.com pays out $4 for every $9 bet compared to the $3 paid out just about everywhere else. What a bargain, right? It is if you think Christie is definitely going to win. Remember, you get back your original $9 bet if she wins in addition to your $4 profit. The odds are read as 4/9 ($4 paid for every $9 bet). But Christie is the only actress that requires more of a risk than a reward. Marion Cotillard (nominated for La Vie En Rose) is listed with 2/1 odds. You'll notice that in Cotillard's case, the number to the left is larger than the number to the right. This is where excelling in High School math really would have been important perhaps. The number to the left indicated your payout. The number to the right indicates how much you will have to bet to receive that payout. In this case (2/1), you would bet $1 to win $2. Of course if you were to bet $2, you would win $4 (for every $1 bet you win $2) and so on. Of course you win nothing if Cotillard doesn't take home an Oscar. The best payout for Cotillard is actually at Bookmaker.com, which has been in business since 1985 and is offering a 20% signup bonus. There, Cotillard pays out $2.25 for every $1.00 bet. Just 25 cents more but that adds up the more you wager. Bookmaker.com's utilizes the American Odds format. In other words Cotillard is listed as +225 and can be thought of as $1.00 pays out $2.25 or $10 pays out $22.50 or a $100 bet pays out $225.00. Notice how the decimal point keeps moving to the right depending on the size of the bet. Canadian Ellen Page has a shot of winning but her odds are much longer, which would make her an upset. The good news for gamblers is she pays out big. A $100 bet would pay $600 at BetUS.com. This is important since elsewhere the payout is closer to $500 for every $100 bet. Remember, you could still bet just $1 to win $6. BetUS.com also pays out the best for Cate Blanchett at a whopping $2000 for every $100 wagered. Sportsbook.com pays the best for Laura Linney in the Savages - $3000 for every $100 bet compared to $2000 at other gambling websites. The "Best Supporting Actress" category is the closest thing to a dead heat. Cate Blanchett is the closest thing to a favorite with payout odds of -110 at some books but you can think of her as paying $1 for every $1 bet across the board, give or take some change. At Sportsbook.com you'll be risking a little less to win a little more since her odds are listed at 6/5 for a $6 payout with every $5 wagered. Blanchett plays a version of singer Bob Dillon in I'm Not There. Men and women playing the opposite sex tends to have a big impact on the Oscar judges. Plus she's nominated in two different categories, you might have already noticed. Amy Ryan pays the most at BetUS.com and if you're looking for a "value" pick, this is certain one. The payout at BetUS.com is $2 for every $1 bet or $200 for every $100 bet. Elsewhere the payout is as low as $130 for every $100 bet. Ruby Dee may win the sentimental vote. She only appeared in American Gangster for 5 minutes tops and hardly said a word, but she's also in her 80's and a long time Civil Rights activist whose Hollywood career stretches back to the 30's. The best payout is again found at BetUS.com - $300 for every $100 bet compared to under $200 at some online gambling websites. And Tilda Swinton for her role in Michael Clayton has a shot as well but she would be a huge upset paying $800 for every $100 bet at Bookmaker.com - the best payout odds by a mile. Saoirse Ronan would also pay the best at Bookmaker.com - $3000 for every $100 bet. Talk about an upset! --- Christopher Costigan, Gambling911.com Publisher CCostigan@CostiganMedia.com Originally published February 23, 2008 10:40 am EST
