Davidson Odds to Win the 2008 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament Could Pay $20,000

The Davidson Wildcats odds to win the 2008 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament could result in a massive payout for a few lucky folks.

Friday night, they dismanteld the Wisconsin Badgers.

It was unclear at press time how many bets were placed on Davidson to win the 2008 Men's Basketball Tournament Championship, however, it can easily be assumed that students and alumni of that school had placed early bets when the odds were as long as 200 to 1 for a payout potential of $20,000 for every $100 bet.

Stephen Curry is the big star of Davidson.  Curry, the son of former NBA 3-point specialist Dell Curry, wanted to play for his father's alma mater, Virginia Tech. But the big schools shied away from the baby-faced Curry, who has grown four inches to 6-foot-3 since signing with Davidson, and now has put the Wildcats into the second round of the Midwest Regional against the Georgetown-Maryland-Baltimore County winner.

Alex Lazaridis, a 19-year-old Davidson sophomore, was one of the hundreds of students who took advantage of the North Carolina college's offer of free transportation, lodging and a ticket to see the men's basketball team continue its run in the NCAA tournament at Ford Field in Detroit.

"This is amazing," Lazaridis said Friday, looking at the sea of fans clad in Wildcat red populating one side of the lower portion of the converted football stadium.

"Davidson wasn't as well known before this" on a national scale, the economics major said. "This will make a big difference."

Two days earlier, Davidson's trustees made the pledge to offer any student bus transportation, two nights lodging and a ticket to see Davidson play Wisconsin in Detroit, 650 miles to the north.

Lazaridis said many students on his bus made it through the ride by yelling out cheers, watching movies and napping. The caravan stopped for lunch in Ohio, he said.

Davidson is an academically rigorous private school with about 1,700 students located 20 miles north of Charlotte. It was making its first round of 16 appearance in nearly four decades.

UCLA is a 6-point favorite at Sportingbet.com while North Carolina is favored by 5½ over Louisville.

Xavier Musketeers beat the West Virginia Mountaineers 79-75 in OT in the Sweet Sixteen round on Thursday. Xavier won as a 1½-point underdog, and the score went well over the total of 137.

Meanwhile, the Pac-10 champion Bruins built up a 21-point lead at halftime on Thursday and managed to hold off a late surge to beat the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers 88-78 in the NCAA West Regional semifinal. UCLA failed to cover the 11½-point spread and the score went over the total of 135.

Louisville had five players reach double figures in Thursday's 79-60 win over Tennessee in East Region Sweet Sixteen action. Louisville covered the 3-point spread and the score went under the total of 145.

Louisville Wins Big Over Tennessee

Louisville's suffocating defense has Rick Pitino a step away from a sixth trip to the Final Four.

Earl Clark scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half and added 12 rebounds, and Pitino's mix of defenses made life miserable for Tennessee in a 79-60 win Thursday night that put Louisville in the East Regional final.

Center David Padgett’s quick return from a knee injury has been a dream for the Louisville Cardinals.

“I just walked out of his room and cried in the hallway because I new without him … there’s new technology where you can drive some cars without a key, but that’s the key to everything on our team,” said forward Terrence Williams when he found out about Padgett’s injury.

As it turned out, Padgett was able to return in January and the senior center has helped the Cards win 11 out of their last 13 games, including the defeat of the Vols.

Villanova Wildcats Bet Could Pay Hundreds of Dollars

Heading into the Sweet 16 we were looking at the Villanova Wildcats.

One of only a handful of teams to be playing in their third Sweet 16 in the last four years, Sportsbook.com currently has the Villanova Wildcats as 11 ½ point underdogs Friday evening and 100-1 to cut down the nets on April 7th.

Despite being such huge long shots, the Wildcats will be able to take the court against the top seed Kansas Jayhawks with a “no lose” attitude. After all, it was just a couple months back where Jay Wright’s squad dropped five straight. After a 22 point lambasting at the hands of mid-major St Joes, a ticket to the Big Dance looked bleak. However, Wright shook his line-up a bit, changed some roles and long story short: the Wildcats earned the final bid to the tournament.

Not surprisingly, Sportsbook.com bettors have profited from Nova’s late season turn around. After starting the season just 5-14 ATS, the Wildcats are a money-making 9-3 ATS in their last 12. The emergence of forward Dwayne Anderson and guard Corey Stokes appear to be the biggest reasons for Nova’s recent success. A seldom used reserve, Anderson was put into the starting lineup and produced immediate results; often leading the team in rebounds and draining clutch 3 pointers. A highly regarded recruit, Stokes started his freshman campaign in a miserable shooting slump. However, during their run, Stokes found his stroke overnight and now opponents need to guard him wherever he is on court.

Of course, any talk of Nova’s success must include their point guard Scottie Reynolds. Although he had a inconsistent sophomore season, the 6’1” guard has been magnificent as of late. Since the start of the Big East Tournament, Reynolds is averaging over 20 PPG while shooting 14-23 from beyond the arc.

The Wildcats will need to be on top of their game in order to pull off the massive upset Friday night. The Jayhawks consistently mowed over their opponents this season averaging 20 PPG more than their opponents. They too have been a decent bet as of late, covering six of their last eight contests.

Possibly the most talented team in all of college hoops, KU has a very deep and balanced attack which sees their top seven players average between 7.1 and 13.1 PPG. Thanks to their abundance of talent coupled with their two easy wins, KU is the 5-2 co-favorite to win it all.

After looking at Sportsbook.com’s “Betting Trends” it appears as is the general consensus is that KU will look to make this game a track meet against the youthful Cats. An overwhelming 95% of the early money is backing the OVER (144).

Regarding the spread, the early bettors are a little more divided (60%) but are leaning toward the Jayhawks covering the 11 ½.

Just a reminder, it is not too late to enter Sportsbook.com’s March Madness Handicapping Challenge. $20,000 has already been awarded and with two more weeks of college hoops action, another $20,000 of GUARANTEED cash is up for grabs.

Davidson vs. Wisconsin Betting Odds; Villanova vs. Kansas Betting Odds

Wisconsin betting odds have the Badgers favored by -4 1/2 points heading into their game against the Davidson Wildcats while Kansas was a huge -11 1/2 point favorite against Villanova.  Betting odds on all the Sweet 16 games are now available at BetOnline.com here

The “Sweet 16” tips off for the Midwest Region on Friday, and Detroit will be the host city for a region  featuring a pair of lower-seeded teams looking for more upsets. Davidson will try to continue their Cinderella run with a win over Wisconsin., while Villanova will take aim at top-ranked Kansas

No.10 Davidson at No.3 Wisconsin – 7:10 PM ET

The Wildcats could be the hottest team left in the tournament in terms of momentum, as they have now won an amazing 24 games in a row after gutsy wins over Gonzaga and Georgetown in the first two rounds. If you did not know about Stephen Curry after his fantastic freshman debut last season, you would be living under a rock if you did not know now. Curry has put up 70 points in the first two games, and 55 of those points have come in the second half when the Wildcats need him most. The Badgers have been their efficient selves over the first two rounds, disposing of Cal State-Fullerton before dropping Michael Beasley and Kansas State. The Badgers stuck to their gameplan of letting Beasley get his points, while shutting the rest of the team down, and Wisconsin executed their plan perfectly. Wisconsin was the -4 1/2 betting odds favorite in this contest, and they could utilize a similar style of play on Davidson and their star player, Curry. Look for the Badgers to use their size and discipline to stop the Wildcats.

No.12 Villanova at No.1 Kansas – 9:40 PM ET

These Wildcats took down Clemson in the first round, before riding the hot hand of Scottie Reynolds to a victory over Siena. Reynolds has shown glimpses of being a gamebreaker in his first two years on campus, but the Villanova guard has averaged 23 points over the first two games of the tournament. The Jayhawks have beaten Portland State and UNLV by an average margin of 21.5 points, and they did it the same way they have all year: with an emphasis on depth and defense. Top to bottom, the Jayhawks may be the most talented team in the nation, with Brandon Rush and Mario Chalmers the best of the bunch. These two have met twice in the past, with the home team winning on each occasion. Betting odds on Kansas were set at -11 1/2 in this clash, and as well as Villanova has played thus far, they are going to have to play the perfect game to get past the Jayhawks, who are building up steam heading into the Elite Eight.

North Carolina Tar Heels Odds to Win 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament (Updated)

Filed under: 2008 March Madness Betting Odds

North Carolina still pays well if you were to bet them to win the 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament now.  In fact, they would pay out close to $300 for every $100 bet ($275 to be precise).

Player of the year candidate Tyler Hansbrough led the 32-2 North Carolina Tar Heels to the ACC regular season and tournament titles.  They entered the Big Dance with odds of 9 to 2 to win the Tournament.  Thus far, the Tar Heels have been among the most dependable teams in the Tournament.

North Carolina made everything look easy in its first two NCAA tournament games, from running out to big early leads to cracking the 100-point mark with plenty of time left on the clock.

The only people who don't sound all that impressed are, well, those same Tar Heels.

"We don't think that winning two games in the NCAA tournament is a huge success for us," junior Marcus Ginyard said.

Several say North Carolina is peaking at the right time. It may be hard to argue after the Tar Heels scored at least 100 points in each of their first two tourney games for a total of 221 points, good for third all-time in the first two games.

Wayne Ellington scored 20 points and the Tar Heels (34-2) raced to a double-digit lead in the first 5 minutes to earn a trip to the East Regional semifinals in Charlotte, located about two hours southwest of their Chapel Hill campus. They will face fourth-seeded Washington State on Thursday night in the same arena where they won last weekend's Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

By contrast, Washington State would pay out $4500 for every $100 bet if they were to win the 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.

Sweet 16 Betting Odds (2008)

Sweet 16 Betting odds are now available at betED.com In addition to the Sweet 16 betting odds you can also find the latest updated 2008 NCAA Men's Championship odds.

North Carolina pays close to $300 for every $100 bet.

And how about those big upsets, perhaps the most remarkable of which was Davidson, which knocked off the heavily favored Georgetown.  Davidson would pay out $6000 for every $100 bet.

As Anna K. Clemmons of ESPN writes, Davidson has now become a household name....at least among College Basketball fanatics.

For most of my post-collegiate life, whenever someone asks me where I went to college, I answer in two parts. "Davidson College … it's outside of Charlotte in North Carolina." Why the geographical tag? Because few people outside the Tar Heel state have heard of the small, liberal arts college 30 minutes from the Queen City.

But thanks to a guard named Stephen Curry, a coach named Bob McKillop and a team of hard-working, strong-willed players, that changed this weekend. Led by point guard Jason Richards (who led the nation in assists this season) and Curry (70 points in two tournament games), 10th-seeded Davidson took down Gonzaga and then Georgetown in the early rounds of the NCAA tournament in Raleigh, N.C.

Remember, you can bet on either the individual games or the team futures to win it all here

Davidson Wildcats Odds to Win the 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament

Posted Mar 23rd 2008 6:02 pm by Jagajeet Chiba
Filed under: 2008 March Madness Betting Odds

The Davidson Wildcats odds to win the 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament were set at an incredible 200 to 1 before the Big Dance.  Now this huge underdog finds itself heading to the next round - the Sweet 16 - after a stunning defeat of Georgetown.

Stephen Curry scored 25 of his 30 points in the second half and little Davidson upset mighty Georgetown 74-70 on Sunday.

"This is what March Madness is all about!" hollered Don Shapiro of Gambling911.com, understanding of course that Davidson has broken many a bracket thus far.

Georgetown was a number two seed.  Davidson was a number 10 seed.

The Georgetown Hoyas would have paid $1200 for every $100 bet if they were to win the 2008 NCAA College Basketball Tournament.  Instead, Davidson has a shot at paying $20,000 for every $100 bet.

There weren't many cupcakes on Davidson's non-Southern Conference schedule, which featured No. 1 seeds North Carolina and UCLA and No. 2 seed Duke.

The Wildcats (27-6) didn't beat any of them, losing by an average of seven points. But coach Bob McKillop's team gained a measure of confidence simply by hanging tough.  Hence, the reason they didn't fear going into this matchup against Georgetown.

"I'd be foolish not to allude to the fact that our guys have played against [UCLA's] Kevin Love and [North Carolina's] Tyler Hansbrough. ... not that we did anything extraordinary against them, but we hung in there," McKillop said. "We came out on a losing end, but we learned some valuable lessons."

Michigan State Spartans Odds to Win the 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament

The Michigan State Spartans odds to win the 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament had been set early at +4000 for a $4000 potential payout on a $100 bet.  The team has inched closer to that goal, securing a spot in the Sweet 16 and beating a heavily bet on Pittsburgh Panthers team.

When the game was on the line, Drew Neitzel and Kalin Lucas were Exhibits 1 and 1A.

The Michigan State guards put on a late shooting-and-ballhandling display to help the fifth-seeded Spartans pull away from Pittsburgh for a 65-54 victory Saturday night in the South Regional.

With Neitzel hitting from long range and Lucas driving for layups, the senior and freshman combined for 21 of their team's final 25 points to help the Michigan State (27-8) win a battle of the bullies--a rough-and-tumble game between two Rust Belt teams who brought their show to the Rocky Mountains.

"I just wanted to be aggressive," Neitzel said. "That's what this team needs from me. Coach has been preaching that."

Neitzel led the Spartans with 21 points, and Lucas finished with 19.

Pitt shot 2 for 17 from three-point range and 32 percent overall, and got the number that high only because it warmed up toward the end. Sam Young finished with 15 points and four blocked shots for the Panthers. DeJuan Blair had 10 points and four blocks, as well.

"They're a great defensive team," Neitzel said. "We knew that coming in. Two great defensive teams out there battling. I just wanted to stay patient."

Pittsburgh on Saturday was the most bet on team, making for a big win with the online bookmakers.

Xavier, Washington State Odds to Win NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament

Filed under: 2008 March Madness Betting Odds

Xavier was listed with +5000 odds to win the 2008 NCAA College Basketball Tournament.  At 40 to 1 odds of winning the 2008 NCAA College Basketball Tournament, Washington State would pay out $4000 for every $100 bet.

Both teams won their respective games on Saturday, providing them a ticket to the Sweet 16.

The group that revived Washington State's moribund basketball program will get one last ride in the NCAA tournament and set yet another milestone.

Seniors Kyle Weaver, Derrick Low and Robbie Cowgill have been guiding the No. 21 Cougars throughout the Tournament. This class, which has broken a pack of futility records in its four years, is now the first to lead the Cougars to two consecutive NCAA appearances.

"We're just really excited and thankful to make it to the NCAA tournament again," said Low, who could be speaking for all of Cougar Nation.

How starved are Washington State fans for postseason play? Winthrop, their unheralded mid-major opponent, is making its eighth NCAA appearance in the past 10 years. Washington State will be making just the sixth trip in its history.

Derrick Low scored 18 points and Kyle Weaver added 15 as the Cougars won a clash of styles, beating Notre Dame 61-41 in the second round of the East Regional on Saturday night.

The Cougars held Luke Harangody to 10 points, half his average, and limited the Irish to half their scoring average, too.

Robbie Cowgill added 12 points for the fourth-seeded Cougars (26-8), who are headed for Charlotte and a regional semifinal game with either North Carolina or Arkansas.

The only other time the Cougars won twice in the NCAA tournament was back in 1941, when they advanced to the national championship, losing to Wisconsin 39-34.

Xavier, meanwhile, won its battle against the number 6-seeded Purdue.  Xavier was a number three seed coming into the Tournament.

C.J. Anderson and Drew Lavender each scored 18 points, Josh Duncan had 16, Stanley Burrell added 11 and two other Musketeers scored eight apiece Saturday in an 85-78 victory that carried Xavier into the semifinals of the West Regional.

The Musketeers (29-6) shot 54 percent in breaking the single-season school record for wins and setting up a meeting with seventh-seeded West Virginia, a surprise winner over Duke, on Thursday in Phoenix.

"We have a number of different players that can answer the bell on offense," coach Sean Miller said. "It's a really a unique team to guard, because on different nights different people can beat you."

West Virginia Mountaineers Odds to Win the 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament

At +1600 odds to win the 2008 NCAA College Basketball tournament, the Wisconsin Badgers would pay $1600 for every $100 bet if they were to win the title.  Over the weekend they moved much closer to that goal, heading into the Sweet 16.

Brian Butch (shown here in March 2006) led the 29-4 Badgers to the Big Ten regular season and conference tournament titles. Wisconsin lost to UNLV as a two-seed in the second round of last year's tournament.

Wisconsin beat Kansas State on Saturday by a score of 72-55.

Wisconsin's 12th win in a row and 25th in 27 games broke the school record for victories in a season. The Badgers head to the regional semifinals in Detroit against Georgetown or Davidson as just about the hottest thing going in college basketball.

But still.

"All year," Michael Flowers said, "a lot of people didn't think highly of us and our talent and our potential."

That's because winning with old-fashioned hard work and toughness, like the Badgers did again Saturday, doesn't elicit much more than a shrug.

UW was out-rebounded by the Wildcats (36-26), and was out-scored in the paint (40-26), but continually hit shots and stopped the little runs that Kansas State put together in the second half to win its 31st game and move onto the Sweet Sixteen for the fourth time in program history.

West Virginia Mountaineers Odds to Win the 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament

West Virginia's odds of winning the 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament were set at +12500 for a $12,500 payout on every $100 bet.  After beating Duke, they were on their way to the Sweet 16.

Joe Alexander had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 7-seeded West Virginia reached the NCAA tournament's round of 16 in Huggins' first season at his alma mater by beating second-seeded Duke 73-67 in the West Regional on Saturday.

West Virginia (26-10) limited Duke to 38 percent shooting and held a 47-27 edge on the boards. The Mountaineers also got 17 points from Alex Ruoff, and 13 points and 11 rebounds from reserve guard Joe Mazzulla, and advanced to face No. 3 Xavier or No. 6 Purdue in Phoenix on Thursday.

Coach Bob Huggins is no stranger to the Sweet 16, but after Saturday's 73-67 upset of Duke, he'll be going there for the first time with West Virginia. Huggins went 3-1 in Sweet 16 games as the coach of Cincinnati.

Huggins was fired from Cincinnati -- a school he led to the 1992 Final Four -- after a drunken driving arrest, then sat out a season before surfacing at Kansas State in 2007. He took that team to the NIT, losing in the second round.

Now he's back home in West Virginia, at the school he played for, and back among basketball's elite.

His Duke counterpart, Mike Krzyzewski, is heading in the opposite direction.

Every year from 1997 through 2006, Duke was a participant in the round of 16. Every single year. It's a stretch that featured three trips to the Final Four and the 2001 national championship. But now Krzyzewski's team is on a two-year drought, having bowed out in the first round in 2007.

Gambling911.com will be presenting odds on each of the Sweet 16 teams as they become official throughout the week.  The odds noted above were those heading into the tournament.  Where available, updated odds will be presented.
