2006 World Cup Betting Preview

World Cup 2006 is almost here…finally. After four years of hype, it’s almost a relief that the soccer World Cup will begin in less than four weeks, on June 9 in Munich. And the tournament will once again become the number one worldwide betting event. Canbet (See Web Site Here), who have offered a wide range of soccer betting for years, will be there for the big show.

Canbet Sportsbook Manager Xavier Read says “We expect the usual strong interest from our international base, but also from hardcore North American fans and the casual observers…it’s a huge event.”

The 2006 World Cup will be held in Germany, with sixty-four games of action, played in 12 different cities in one month. Munich will hold the opening game (featuring the host country) and Berlin will host the long-awaited final on July 9. The tournament is divided up into eight groups, consisting of four teams each. The teams play three games total within the group stage, with the top two advancing to the knockout stage. During the knockout stage, each match is in the one-game elimination style.

The defending champions, Brazil, are once again favorites to take home the cup, with a short price of +270 on Canbet.com. The second co-favorites are currently England and the hosts Germany both at +700 (at Canbet). England recently lost the services of star striker Wayne Rooney, although there is a chance he may be back in time for the later rounds. Argentina looks a good price at +750 and Holland can be had at +1200 to win it all. For the eternal optimists out there, team USA are 66 to 1 on Canbet.com.

Canbet’s Read added that “although Brazil are the deserved favorite, the tournament is still wide open. Greece won the European Championship even though they were long, long odds at the beginning (in 2004).”

In addition to the tournament win odds (which will be open throughout the month), fans can also bet place. In the place market, bettors receive half the win odds if your team makes the final.

Each group also has a separate betting market, and there are separate markets for both England and Australia’s World Cup campaigns. Canbet will offer a huge range of options: each of the sixty four games will have coupon, Asian Handicap, Correct Score and a whole host of other bet types available.
