Barbaro Wins
Kentucky Derby at 5 to 1 odds going into Saturday
Barbaro
is the winner of the 2006 Kentucky Derby following
record betting on the event
Perhaps it was an
increased marketing presence or maybe the fact that
Giacomo's massive payout last year had more people
betting than in the history of this race.
Whatever the case may be, Sports911.com is reporting
that more people have accessed its web site
searching for Kentucky Derby related betting odds
than had previously been recorded during this past
Super Bowl Sunday, thus making it the web site's
biggest single bet on sporting event in its 5 1/2
year existence.
This year's winner was
Barbaro entering at 5 to 1 odds and an impressive
win at that. Blue Grass Cat finished second.
Steppenwolfer was third.
Steppenwolfer was a
favorite among the wise guys and received a heavy
nod to win here at Sports911.com.
Brother Derek had
dropped down to 8 to 1 odds just prior to post time
and Lawyer Ron, 12 to 1. Barbaro was the
favorite at 4 to 1 odds. Steppenwolfer, the
favorite among Sports911.com wise guys, had dropped
all the way to 14 to 1 just minutes before post
time.
Bettors were not
impressed with the post positions of early favorites
Brother Derek and Lawyer Ron.
SweetNorthernSaint was
the favorite with late money at 5 to 1.
Despite a good run down the stretch, Barbaro pulled
away by the longest length in many years.
Barbaro was among the
sentimental favorites. Trainer
Michael Matz
was among the survivors of a United Airlines crash
in 1989. But even more enlightening is the
fact that on that horrible day, Matz managed to save
three children who were on board. The three -
now adults - were in attendance to watch Matz win.
One even missed his college graduation to attend.
